the morning news continues. good morning to you. welcome to a brand new day, thursday, august 25th. i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. how is the weather today, mark? >> reporter: we started to cool off a bit yesterday. the trend will continue for this afternoon. that is the key key for your headline. temperatures ranging from 60 to 90 degrees. we'll break down the temperatures in the few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. >> reporter: it's getting a lot busier. if you already know it's beginning to get stop and go but also pittsburgh is getting into the act. also the morning commute looks good. 6:01. let's go back to the desk. will the apple magic

continue? that's the big question after ceo steve job calls it quit. >> reporter: his brill lance has been brill lance has been documented. right now we are at apple headquarters. these are pictures we took a couple of minutes ago. the 52-year-old turned in his resignation yesterday. he's developed a cult like following not only with his employees but the public. apple store openings like this one create a bit of tis tier ya and the product launches generate hype. many are wonnerring what will happen to apple in the future.

jobs kept his medical problems private but we know they date back seven years. over the past three years he's been visibly thinner. in 2009 he took a leave of absence to receive a live transplant. he recommended tim cook as his replacement. cook has been at apple for 13 years prizing through the ranks. jobs related a statement saying i believe apple's most brightest and innovative days are ahead of it. >> the impact of jobs announcement on the google stock market is already being felt this morning. apple's stocks was up when wall street closed yesterday but

that was before the announcement. now it looks like it will be down 50%. some of apple's rivals have seen their stock up on the muse. we do have steve jobs resignation letter posted on our website. you can fine it on our homepage, ktvu.com under the steve jobs tab. two people are scheduled for arraignment on charges related to an apple protoe prototype. photos of the iphone four prototype surfaced. that blogger will not face charges in the case. barry bonds goes back to federal courtroom in san francisco this morning. last night barry bonds, a rare experience at at&t park. he watched the giants beat the

padres. in a couple howevers his lawyers will try to persuade a judge to throw hut his connection or grant him a new trial. a three hour meeting was held on this very controversial issue. in the future bart will interrupt cell phone communication during extreme circumstances like a bomb threat or a hostage situation. they will also be consulting the arkclu on creating this new policy. >> you're counter protest strategy is failing miserably. >> our job is your job. we take pride in the fact that we are responsible for getting people to and from in a safe,

washington, d.c. bureau. we have the latest on how the fire crews got the situation under control. >> reporter: we are live in the city of lincoln. take a look with me right there. that is the tanker that yesterday had a huge billowing flame atop of it as it was burning propane away. this morning, the flame is now complete limon. take a look at some of this video just to give you a sense of the raging fire that this was. there was talk about a daring and bold move to drill a hole in the bottom of this tanker and drain out the liquid propane and start a separate, bigger bonfire in a nearby retention pond to burn off this propane. crews never had to do that because as they were preparing to do this they realized this

tanker, the springs on the tanker were not as compressed as normally. they realized there wasn't as much propane in this tank as they thought so they never had to go with that bold, daring move. instead they let it burn itself out. at 3:45 this morning it did that after nearly 40 hours of burning here live. the evacuates were lifted around midnight. a very different scene from a day ago. there was the risk of explosion. all of that risk is mow gone. they plan to slow down the plan to installing u verse bobs. the lawsuit could force the city to do a full environmental

report. city planners say such a report is not necessary. this foggy summer is creating problems on that big paint job on the golden gate bridge. crews haven't laid down a single coat of paint in the past two weeks. the position creates moisture which makes the paint too wet to stick. the work is more than cosmetic. the paint helps to protect thousands of wires to keep the bridge up. >> they really want the one side to reopen. good morning, everyone. traffic is going to be affected. let me put my maps into on air

with us this morning. it's been around the coast for the past few days. even some inland neighborhoods as well out toward liver more. here we go with the current fog pattern out there toward santa row is a. san jose reporting mostly cloudy skies. you can see san francisco 58 degrees. holding onto a few low 60s and san jose in the lower 60s around 62 degrees. we started to cool off yesterday an the friend will continue for today. for the coast the temperature is not this time of year. the neighborhood's clearing sky and temperatures on the warm sometime here is the forecast model updated showing you the fog out there this morning.

welcome back. the u.s. military is scrambling for hurricane' teen hit the east coast. >> reporter: this morning the u.s. navy ordered its second fleet to move out to sea. they don't want the ship damaged by the wind and rain. they are making some moves this morning. they told local officials to begin to activate their emergency plans. georgia is stocking up with blankets, meals and bottles of water. they want to quickly ship the supplies to any damaged areas. >> we're very comfortable with our evacuation plans. we feel like we have the necessary manpower and we can

let you know when it's time to evacuate. as the governor said, be comfortable on our coast but be watchful and cautious. >> reporter: that's the word from south carolina. that's concern this hurricane is targeting areas unaccustomed to hurricanes including new jersey, and new york city. scott, channel 2 news. the u.s. is pushing for the action. back in march the u. n. froze the libyan government assets to pressure muammar gadhafi to

strengthen. here is the forecast. latest details. winds of 115 miles per hour. - the track. very close to the north carolina coastline as we head into late friday and into saturday. there could still be some adjustment with the forecast track but still we are expect winds to back off a little bit as we head into saturday but still some pretty serious hurricane and then heading to the north and east but we could still be talking about a hurricane even close to new york city as we head into the weekend. we'll keep an eye on the changing forecast. temperatures for today, we are cooling off about two to four degrees cooler than yesterday's readings. that means pacifica 81-degree. another weather check in a few minutes. we have some breaking news

in business. warren buffet announced he will invest $5 million in bank of america. the stock will open significantly higher on that news. markets open in just about ten minutes. we'll have more on that coming up. even researchers are surprised about the results of a new survey about health percents. companies expects to stop offering health coverage after insurance exchange in 2014. another 20% is not sure what they will do but are considering the option. the nation's largest natural food store plans to add wellness clubs during the next three months. whole foods says it will give shoppers lifestyle evaluations as well as nutrition, cook and health classes. members receive a 10% discount on thousands of products. one of the stores slated for

the hiker that died this week is from the bay area. the 3-year-old fell more than # thousand feet to his death monday evening. >> tuesday we were able to spot his body via a helicopter and

schedule. not an unusual sight to have fog out here. you can take a look at the knot tower. it's wet. the roadways are wet. if you take a look over here, you can see. this is just very, very wet situation and you think about trying to paint under the conditions you can see why they are having problems with this project. they are focused on the cable. those are the cables they want to appellant. they haven't been painted. the first time was almost 75 years ago. you're looking at wires that are bound together with that spiral. they want to put a coat on that outward layer to protect it. we talk about this air and fog out here. they want to do a protection on that. this project is ahead by about two weeks.

it's just been too wet this morning and every everyone has to get job done. at this point it looks like a bit of a holding pattern. they're saying you just can't do this kind of work. at this point the project is just delayed and they are hoping that nature will cooperate and they can get the work done. claudine wong, channel 2 news. some restaurants are closing until water tests confirm it's safe. water was restored yesterday. the tests could be completed by the enof the week. san mateo health officials are advising people to boil their water. in overnight news, a man is

behind bars after a police chasely the north bay. police were notified that suspects, 4-year-old gerald mccarthy was riding a motorcycle drunk and with a handgun. officers spotted him yesterday. they chased him on highway 101. when they cornered him he displayed the gun and threatened to shoot himself. the sheriff's department took over from there. >> we didn't know what we had. all we know is we had an armed subject who didn't want the peacefully surrender at that point. >> he did surrender at 10:30 last night. he's been booked in jail. deputies are searching for the gunman who robbed a woman at her home in ash land. it happened on saturday at

about 12:30 in the afternoon. three robbers knocked on the door and forced their way inside. the man hit the woman on the head. she was treated at a hospital. so far no arrests have been made. the man who stole voting ballots is scheduled to be released today. carl bradford nicholas stole items. now he has to serve three years probation which includes staying out of all polling places on election day. it's back to school day at uc berkeley and the chancellor has some surprising news for thousands of students heading back to class. the news is cal is in good financial shape, at least for now. technically uc berkeley was about $60 million in the hole because of budget cuts. yet the campus still has enough money in reserves to fill the

gap for the next two years. the chancellor has spoken to major organizations like the ford foundations. the new state law allows public colleges and universities to offer private scholarships to students who came to the u.s. illegally and president obama supports laws allowing hem to go to school and become legal citizens. san jose police have ended their brief alliance with i. c. e. agents. they were brought in in june. the chief credits them with arrested more than 200 dangerous gang members. some community members are happy to see them go. >> it was difficult for members of our community to feel like they could call the police without fear of other kinds of

repercussions. >> san jose police still insist the i. c. e. agents played a major role in the dramatic drop in gang violence. the fbi is involved in a phone hacking scandal. coming up at 6:45, we'll tell you how attorney general is responding to the allegations. to the, a state assembly will vote on abolishing the death penalty in california. it would replace the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of parole. hancock calls the death penalty policy in california a failure. she says the state is spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year to keep more than 700

in january janine harms brother shot an killed him and then killed himself. harms body has never been found. the fbi investigating allegations of family members of 9/11 victims were the targets of a british phone hacking scandal. a retired new york police officer told the british press that the tabloid, news of the world, offered to pay him for private phone records of 9/11 victims. attorney general met with some of the family members in washington yesterday. >> he promised us today there would be full justice if these allegations are true, which we hope they are not. >> the news of the world tabloid shut down last month because of another phone hacking scandal. news operation, the owner of that newspaper, called the new charges anonymous speculation.

coast this morning. patchy fog at 3:00. in the inland neighborhood still some patchy fog. upper 80s to right around the 90 degrees mark. giants playing a game tonight at 7:15. partly cloudy skies and a bit of a breeze out there. temperatures around the 60 degrees mark. here is a look ahead with the extended forecast. a little bit warmer by the weekend. these are all just minor changes with no heat waves in sight. another weather check in a few minutes. the strike by verizon workers boosted the number for first time people filing unemployment claims last week. 8500 verizon workers were included in that number because

they were walking the picket lines and they filed for first time unemployment benefits. checking in on wall street right now. the numbers show dow jones up about three points, not a lot. we'll take it. a little bit of a gain and apple stock is quite busy. it looks down as expected just about 2%. we're watching that and bank of america after an announcement from warren buffet that he is investing $5 million. the cadillac escalade is the most likely vehicle to be stolen. insurance claims show it's six times more likely than average to be stolen. ten times more likely to be broken into. the least popular car is th i a 6. >> okay. we're still talking about

welcome back. an attempted car robbery ended with the arrest of one man and the death of his brother. the two men tried to rob the armored car about 9:15 yesterday morning. police say pierre daniel and hi brother tried to rob the truck but the female resisted and there was a gun battle that broke out. pierre daniel was killed. freddy was arrested. the female guard was hurt. her condition has not yet been released. police say both daniel brothers had warrants in connection with another bank robbery back in may. there was more shaking. there was a powerful aftershock that rattled virginia. it was centered outside the town of mineral. mineral is just about 80 miles outside of washington, d.c.
